ASHLAND - Murals are popping up next to storm drains all over Ashland.

The art is part of the 2024 Storm Drain Project. Work on the public art project started last week, with the designs meant to reinforce the danger to the environment pollution from storm drains poses, especially tobacco waste. Six artists are painting, including an artist who lives in Iowa but came to the city to take part. Murals will be in front of the Courthouse, by Chequamegon Food Co-Op, by Axel’s Saw and Tool Shop, by the scenic overlook on Highway 2, by Sixth Avenue and Main Street and by Vaughn Avenue and Main Street. Artists responded to a call for entries and were chosen based on creativity, connection to the theme and experience. The City of Ashland Parks and Rec Department and the Northwest Wisconsin Lung Health Alliance are sponsoring the event. It’s hoped that an open house and mural walk can be planned for the fall.
