IRONWOOD – Thick smoke in the air over the weekend will extend into today as a result an Air Quality Alert has been issued through late this evening. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has issued the alert for Keweenaw, Iron, Baraga, Houghton, Ontonagon, and Gogebic counties. Pollutants are expected to be in the Unhealthy range. In Wisconsin, the National Weather Service says Ashland, Bayfield, Iron, Vilas, Washburn counties can expect that alert to expire mid-day today. Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to affect most of the region. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory issues. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. For more information, go to airnow.gov.
