UPPER MICHIGAN - The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department has launched its annual beach water monitoring program for the 22nd year, testing beaches across the Western U.P. including in Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties for E. coli throughout the swimming season. Most beaches meet water quality standards, but weekly testing helps identify potential health risks. Beach advisories and closures will be posted on Michigan's BeachGuard website. Health officials recommend avoiding swimming for 48 hours after heavy rain, staying out of water with suspicious algae blooms, and avoiding swimming with open wounds.
